Our grocery bill is something we have struggled with. I always get shocked when they give us our total and I’m thinking to myself “Now how did that happen? I thought we were doing pretty good!” But I realize that there were extra things in the basket that we didn’t really need and those really start to add up!
When I heard about Wal-Mart grocery pick-up and that it was saving people money on their grocery bill, I was intrigued and wanted to give it a try! The only snag was I wanted to get groceries right then and there and didn’t want to have to wait until later or even the next day. I figured it was worth it to try and see if we could really save money with Wal-Mart grocery pick-up. (And just so you know! This is in no way sponsored by Wal-Mart! These are my own opinions but I wouldn’t mind that sponsorship Wal-Mart if you’re reading!)
So what did I learn? Did I save any money?
For us, we DID save money! Every time we order we always are amazed at how much food we got for the price we paid!
While it did save us money, I wanted to share with you how it saved us money and how it can save you money too!
1. No wandering the aisles
Now sometimes I don’t mind wandering the aisles at the grocery store. It’s kind of fun to see all the different products I can get, especially new ones! But the downside to that is, there are so many temptations for me to want to add to my shopping cart and buy!
When using Wal-Mart grocery pick-up, I have to specifically search for the items that I want and since the search brings up what I’m looking for, there’s less of a chance for me to grab something else that could bring my total up.
2. Easy to check the pantry and fridge for what you already have
This pointer is more if you’re actually at home when you’re shopping for your groceries online, but it’s one that I’ve found really helpful! How many times have you gone to the store to buy something only to find out that you have plenty extra at home? This happens to us all the time, especially with something like ketchup!
Of course, the opposite can happen to where you’re pretty sure you have enough and you come home to find out that you really needed to buy that bottle of ketchup because you only have a couple of squirts left.
Doing your grocery shopping online to pick up later helps to eliminate these problems and also saves you money from buying extras that you didn’t need to get.
3. Same price as in store
I haven’t used any other grocery store services, but for Wal-Mart, you get the same price online as you do in the store. I love this perk because it means I’m not sacrificing extra money for ease of use.
4. Save money on time
I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that grocery shopping tends to take a lot of time, even when you know exactly what you’re getting. You have to drive to the store, park, walk into the store and then walk around getting what you need. After that, you have to wait in line to check out, walk to your car, put those groceries away, and drive home again to put them away in your house.
When I use Wal-Mart grocery pick-up, I don’t think I’ve spent more than 10 minutes putting in my order. While I do have to wait until my specific pick-up timeframe, I’m not spending all that time in the store waiting around so I can get other things done, or I have my husband Sean pick the order up on his way home from work.
I do admit, sometimes there is a line to get your order picked up so there can still be a bit of a wait. But it’s still minimal compared to the amount of time I’d spend in the store getting the number of groceries I get through pick-up.
5. See the total in real time
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I have been shocked to see the total being as high as it is when checking out. But when you’re doing online ordering, you’re able to see the total update (pre-tax) in real time. This helps me to make a decision on if I really need that extra carton of ice cream or not.
Since you can see the total in real time, if you decide you don’t want something in your cart anymore, or you want to change the number of a particular item, you just click a few buttons! No need to tell the store clerk that you no longer want that item and have it put away later.
One of the things I love about Wal-Mart’s grocery pick-up is the way they do substitutions if what you want isn’t in stock. We generally get the store brand items to save money, which is another tip to cut your grocery bill down, but if Wal-Mart is out of the store brand item you want, they will substitute at no extra cost to you!
So what do you get when they substitute? They’ll either get you the equivalent of the item in a different brand (usually name brand) or they’ll get you the larger item of the same brand. We’ve gotten Kraft Mayo instead of the Great Value brand, and we’ve also gotten double the lunch meat when they didn’t have the smaller size we had purchased.
Of course, if you’re picky about what you want to get, you can always let them know you don’t want anything to be substituted when you’re checking out. You can also tell them upon pick up that you’re not okay with those substitutions and they’ll remove them for you and you won’t be charged. We haven’t ever done that though as we aren’t too picky about substitutions in our home.
If you have Wal-Mart, or other stores, grocery pick-up, I suggest giving it a try and seeing how it can save you money on your groceries each month! See if it’ll save you time and money from not wandering the aisles, being able to check what you have already at home, and seeing the total in real time. It’s definitely helped us to save on our grocery bills, and I know it can help you too!
